Totalitarianism WebQuest
Directions:
For this WebQuest, you will be answering questions in your notebook, filling out the thesis outline, and writing a 6 paragraph essay on one country's totalitarian regime. You will choose ONE country to focus on.
First, create a new page in your notebook titled Totalitarianism. Next, write a definition of totalitarianism. Then, write each section heading (Biography and Political party, Social Aspects, etc.), copy the questions down from each section, and answer them in your notebook. You will find the answers by researching the links provided for you.
After you have answered all of the questions, fill out your Thesis Outline paper. Make sure to create your buckets for each body paragraph and fill them with information, organize them with the chicken foot diagram, and then write out your full thesis paragraph.
Lastly, you will write your essay. This essay will answer the question "What made (your country) a totalitarian regime?" In your notebook create a new page titled Totalitarian Regime Essay. Open the Totalitarian Regime Essay Outline document located in the Essay Documents section below. This will show you the format that you NEED to follow when writing your essay. When you are finished, raise your hand and let me know.

Your first body paragraph will have to tell about the leader of the political party of the totalitarian regime that you are researching, and what the ideas of his party are all about. You will need to answer the questions:
- What is the leaders background?
- What are the stated ideals of the political party?
- How did he gain support for his ideas? How did he rise to power?

Social Aspects
Your second body paragraph will tell about the culture and different ways of life under your totalitarian regime. A totalitarian government uses many tactics to control all aspects of a citizen's life. You will need to research what life was like for the average citizen and answer the following questions:
- What were some of the things this dictator's party did to control day to day life?
- What was life like for women/children/minorities in the country?
- What were the ways that the government dealt with dissent?

Economy
Your third body paragraph will discuss the economy of your country. The economy of your country is important because it influences both the feelings of ordinary citizens and the actions taken by the government. For example, during a period of economic stability or economic growth, citizens are more likely to be content with the government and the world. You will need to answer these questions about your country's economy.
- What was the unemployment rate prior to this totalitarian government taking power?
- What promises or actions did the leader offer to the citizens to improve their lives?
- How did the economy improve/change under this leader?

Political Environment
Your fourth body paragraph will discuss the political environment of the country. You will need to find out how the government operates. You will need to answer the following questions:
- Who has the right to vote?
- Who controls the press?
- Do the citizens have a right to voice their opinion to the government?
- What role does the military have in the government?

For this project you are going to become an expert on one event that occurred during the Cold War. You will be acting as a photojournalist. You will be gathering research, photos and images, and answering the most important questions about your event. Your task is to create a presentation in Google Drive that shows me you are an expert on your event. Use the links I have provided below to conduct your research. You may also use search engines.

-BONUS final slide that contains a primary source that you think helps us better understand your event
-you must include the title of your primary source and a link to your primary source on the last slide
-you must answer the questions to SOAPSTone about your primary source on the final slide
-a SOAPSTone guide document is located at the top of the project instructions

When you are finished you will present your finished product to Mr. Somogye for your grade. ALL PROJECTS WILL BE GRADED ON WEDNESDAY, APRIL 30. We will be in the computer lab april 23, 24, 25, 28, and 30 (for grading). If you are worried about finishing it on time, work on it over the weekend, at snack, at lunch, or after school. Make sure it is finished when you come into class on Wednesday, April 30.
